Ecco il testo con qualche interessante commento (non è opera
mia, ma di un certo Umberto Nonsoilcognome).

illustratore di libri per bambini. Secondo un aneddoto Stipe si
ostinava a pronunciare “Zeus” al posto di “Seuss”. Con un po’ di
fatica riesce ad imparare la pronuncia corretta, ma al momento
della registrazione pronuncia di nuovo “Zeus”, e così gli scappa
una risatina all’inizio del ritornello.

fate caso ai film americani: se c'è un bambino con un libro delle
favole, potete scommettere al 99% che è un libro di racconti di Seuss.

io l'avevo interpretata come patch = pezza (tipo da mettere sui
vestiti), che non puo` essere messa col "computer design", come a dire
ci sono cose che i computer non possono fare ("it's just a lot of stupid
stupid signs"). magari ho cannato completamente... su REMfanzine per
esempio viene interpretato "Ma questo aggeggio è solo in grado di
inghiottire soldi/ non si può neanche provare a fregarla con qualche
trucco informatico, è solo un insieme di stupidissimi segnali..."

In effetti non credo neanche io che patch in questo caso voglia dire
fix per programma. Il fatto e' che in italiano patch ha solo quel
significato, visto che i termini informatici non vengono tradotti,
mentre in inglese ne ha altri, tipo placca o macchia oltre che toppa o
rammendo. Comunque lay a patch significa rattoppare, rammendare in
tutti i sensi, quindi sono quasi convinto che voglia dire + o - che
con un programma da disegno per computer (By computer design) non puoi
fare una toppa per rammendare un vestito.

molto interessante anche questa interpretazione della canzone che ho

I can sleep in a phone box. "If I don't pick up, pick up, the sidewinder
sleeps, sleeps, sleeps in a coil" meaning if I don't answer the phone,
the handset's wire will just rest in a coil. The verse begining "Baby
instant soup" is a refrence to possible ways of passing time in the
phone box all along late at night. Watching falling stars, eating candy
bars, or reading a Dr. Suess book"

To wind significa avvolgere, avvolgersi, salire a spirale.
Sidewinder significa tante cose. E' un modo per chiamare un serpente,
il filo del telefono che si arrotola, e' un famoso tipo di joystick ed
anche un missile aria-aria tra i piu' usati e longevi nella storia
dell' aviazione militare americana. Secondo me e' una parola che si
associa a qualsiasi cosa si avvolga su se' stessa o faccia movimenti
sinuosi o spiraloidi, tipo i serpenti. Penso abbia altri significati
che non conosco. La canzone fa il verso a the lion sleeps tonight
quindi il serpente e' la prima cosa che mi viene in mente. Le prime 3
o 4 interpretazioni che ho letto della canzone dicevano che parla di
un barbone che dorme per strada avvinghiandosi come un serpente e che
usa una cabina telefonica per vivere.
Chissa' se su murmurs o rec.music.rem ci sono delucidazioni al
riguardo, penso proprio di si'!

Per rispondermi in privato: la parte a sinistra della chiocciolina
e' in ROT13, e sostituisci dante con virgilio.
